SAFETY TIP: What type of equipment requires an Equipment-Specific LOTO procedure?

Answer: OSHA requires that an equipment specific LOTO procedure be developed for any equipment that meets one or more of the following conditions:

• Equipment can accumulate energy (Example: has a capacitor);
• Equipment has more than one energy source;
• Equipment is not powered down during servicing or maintenance;
• Two or more LOTO devices are needed to achieve a locked-out condition;
• The LOTO device is not under the exclusive control of the authorized employee performing the servicing or maintenance;
• The servicing or maintenance creates hazards for other employees; or
• An accident involving the unexpected activation or reenergization of the equipment has occurred during servicing or maintenance.
