Enviro Safetech Goes Green!

10/12/2021

Enviro Safetech is pleased to announce we have received final city, and all necessary safety inspections, and approvals to convert our building (2160 Oakland Road, San Jose) to generate electricity using solar energy. Jay Jamali Founder and CEO of Enviro Safetech said, “This important step meets a personal goal of mine, and one more capstone on our efforts to move our company towards a more green, sustainable, and carbon neutral status.”

High efficiency LED lighting
The completion of the installation and certification of the new solar array is part of Enviro Safetech's efforts at energy conservation that include, recently resurfacing the roof with highly heat reflective foam coating to improve building insulation and reduce cooling requirements. In addition all office lighting has been replaced with high efficiency, low energy use LED lighting, which has also noticeably improved the quality of light, by removing the harsh fluorescent lighting, throughout the building.

In addition, 50% of the company’s vehicles are now Electric Vehicle (EV) or hybrid-electric. Staff and customers will be able to charge at work and while visiting our offices, using a new auto charging station. Of the three Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles in our vehicle pool, two are low emission (zero fumes), high efficiency turbo-diesels, and only one vehicle remains a traditional gasoline engine.

Future energy saving goals that remain include completion of the ongoing upgrade replacement of our HVAC systems (30% complete), and replacing all ICE vehicles with EV or Hybrid-Electric versions.
(Stay tuned for status update on our pre-order of the new Tesla CyberTruck!)

Safety Pro Tip: N95 vs KN95 and various masks

8/11/2021

There is a lot of confusion and a lot of masks available to prevent COVID.

This video explains what N95 and KN95 means, as well as goes through the differences and effectiveness of the various masking alternatives.

Cloth Masks (Includes Bandanas, Gaiters etc.): 2% efficiency
Pros: Good at protecting others from you if you are sick and coughing droplets.
Cons: 98% inefficient at protecting you from the others.

Surgical Mask: 5% efficiency
Pros: Good at protecting others from you if you are sick and coughing droplets.
Cons: 95% inefficient at protecting you from the others.

KN95 Mask: 25% efficiency
Pros: Good at protecting others from you if you are sick and coughing droplets.
Cons: The KN95 name is misleading and suggests 95% efficiency. This is not true. KN95 masks are 75% inefficient at protecting you from the others.

N95 Mask: 95% efficiency
Pros: Good at protecting others from you if you are sick and coughing droplets.
Cons: Is often mistaken as the same as the KN95 mask.

P100 Filtered Air Purifying Respirator (APR): 100% efficiency
Pros: The best protection you can get.
Cons: Cost more. Require training on how to put on and use. exhalation valves do not prevent you from infecting others you if you are sick and coughing droplets.

Safety Pro Tip of the week:

Check your LOTO group boxes. Some older group lock boxes have a design flaw that still allows you to reach in and take keys. Check your group lock boxes to make sure they cannot be opened.

We recently completed teaching a 2-day fall protection competent person class, and the biggest surprise for our client was the Fed-OSHA requirement for snaphooks and carabiners, which are required to have a gate strength of 3600 pounds (16 kN), and that the hook is self closing, self locking, and is operated by double action.

Click for OSHA Regulation

1910.140(c)(8): The gate strength of snaphooks and carabiners must be capable of withstanding a minimum load of 3,600 pounds (16 kN).

1910.140(c)(9): Snaphooks and carabiners must be the automatic locking type that require at least two separate, consecutive movements to open. Opening a snaphook requires two separate actions. Snaphooks are generally one of two types:
  1. Automatic-locking type (permitted) with a self-closing and self-locking gate that remains closed and locked until intentionally unlocked and opened for connection or disconnection;
  2. Non-locking type (prohibited) with a self-closing gate that remains closed, but not locked, until intentionally opened for connection or disconnection. Be safe out there and check your snaphooks and carabiners.
