Neglecting Your Electrical Safety Training can be Deadly

From CalOsha Reporter - 7/25/14
2 deadly electrocutions occurred in California this week, on July 15 and 17.

In the first incident, a painter employed by Winlup Painting, Inc., doing business as CertaPro Painters, was killed at a residential site in Westchester. The painter was working from an aerial lift and made contact with a 66 kilovolt overhead electrical line. “Southern California Edison had to de-energize the power line before the fire department could retrieve the body,” reports Peter Melton, public information officer for the Department of Industrial Relations.

The second incident was similar. It occurred at Mission Viejo High School, where employees of Five Star Plastering, based in Laguna Hills, were erecting a 20-foot-high metal scaffold that reportedly was slated to hold a banner honoring veterans.

“The scaffold was directly under the high voltage electrical lines with only two feet of clearance above the scaffold guard- rails,” Melton tells Cal-OSHA Reporter. One of the two-man crew was alone on the top level of the scaffold and the second worker, on the ground, noticed his co-worker lyinglat on the platform. He climbed the scaffold in an attempt to revive his colleague and also was shocked.

Both men subsequently were taken to a nearby hospital, where the first man was declared dead. The second worker was admitted to intensive care in critical condition.
